Sheep and shepherds were commonly known and understood concepts in Jesus' culture. It's the job of the shepherd to guide and protect their flock. Using the metaphor of a good shepherd, Jesus informs us that we can not only trust Him for salvation, but for safety, provision and restoration of our souls.
